Unsurprisingly I love this idea. Have been pushing it for faculty governance for a while now but no takers even at a tiny scale! wapo.st/3YQbKKc

@MagisterConway @ArmandDAngour lol that's a good one. I was just having this conversation (not the Plautus one, the immo one) with students: I had said German doch rather than French si, but it is weird to me that English has nothing better than "yuhHUH" for this

@ArmandDAngour I was just poking around Plautus and found this from Rudens, which confirms your answer and got me a good chuckle to boot: Grip. Num medicus, quaeso, es? Labr. Immo edepol una littera plus sum quam medicus. Grip. Tum tu mendicus es? Labr. Tetigisti acu.

Latin question: For a question with "Num...?" (which is expecting a "No" answer) where the answer is "Yes," is it more appropriate to use "ita" or "minimē" or neither? e.g. "Num Rōmānus es?" "___! Sum Rōmānus!" (basically, what's the equivalent of the French "si"?)

Exciting new method of grading Latin mid-terms just dropped: I have arranged them in ascending order of legibility. Why did I not think of this years ago

@ArmandDAngour Are they going to dance the choruses too?? That's what I've always wanted to see: metrical singing and dancing. Film it for posterity!

I always wanted to watch an ancient Greek play spoken in correct Attic Greek, with plausible costumes and choreography. After my work on ancient music, a reasonable ancient score with double pipe accompaniment was also a desiderandum. Now brilliant Oxford students are putting on Euripides’ Orestes in November- in the closest form one might get to the original. Can’t wait to see it! ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/oxfor…

@ArmandDAngour I can imagine it's love-it or hate-it, but I thought it got better and better, and the last two episodes especially I thought were great. But if it's not for you, it's not!

TIL Smyth identifies something called the "plural of modesty" for when people refer to themselves in the plural (often in tragedy). WTF?? What is "modest" about this?? People just do that all the time in tragedy!

Genuinely amazing however (sorry I just couldn't stop) is that §1009 reveals that in tragedy when a female character refers to herself in the plural *the subject can be masculine plural* (check out the example from the Alcestis):
