Underrated coaching truth: The best coaches aren’t obsessed with talent. They’re obsessed with effort. With attitude. With toughness. Because when it gets hard, that’s what still shows up.

Went to the car dealership Saturday Wife wants a new SUV Salesman walked over and said "what are we looking for today?" I said "what's your margin on the Tahoe?" He laughed I said "I'm not joking. What's the invoice price versus the sticker and what holdback does the dealer get from GM?" He stopped laughing My wife said "we're just browsing" We were not just browsing I brought a spreadsheet Printed Color coded Blue for inputs Black for calculations I showed him the comparable transaction analysis I ran on every Tahoe sold within 50 miles in the last 90 days He said "sir this is a car dealership" I said "and these are the comps" He went to get his manager The manager came out Looked at my spreadsheet Looked at me Said "where do you work?" I said "private equity" He said "that explains it" My wife was already in the lobby pretending she didn't know me We got the Tahoe $4,200 below sticker She didn't thank me But the savings speak for themselves You are welcome Sent from my iPhone

Teaching my daughter about payroll withholding She did chores all week so I owe her $10 I hand her $7 > this isn't $10 "right, I withheld the rest" > what does that mean "I kept $3 of your money" > but it's my money "It was your money" > what are you even doing with it? "Funding household infrastructure" > what "The roof over your head. The hallway you walk through to get to the bathroom. The door locks that keep strangers out" > you're charging me for the hallway "I'm charging you for access to the hallway. The hallway itself was a capital expenditure" > you're my dad. you're supposed to--- "I'm also your government" > what if I don't want to pay for the hallway "Then I can't guarantee the hallway" > it's a hallway. It's already there "For now" She asks what else the $3 covers "Meals, dispute resolution, nightlight maintenance" > dispute resolution? "When your brother takes your toys and I make him give them back. That's taxpayer funded" > that's just parenting "That's the Department of Justice" > what about meals. You already feed me "That's a social program. Not everyone qualifies" > I'm your daughter "Which is why you're currently enrolled" She wants to see where the money goes I tell her that would require a FOIA request > what's that "A form asking me to show you what I do with your money. Processing time is 6 to 8 weeks" > 6 weeks to see where my $3 went? "Could be longer. We're understaffed" > there's two of you She asks how she gets any of it back "It's already spent" > you spent my money already? "We had a budget shortfall" > you just took it 20 seconds ago "And the deficit existed 30 seconds ago. The timing worked out" > so I'm not getting it back "I didn't say that. You might qualify for a refund" > of my own money "Correct. You just have to fill out a form telling me how much you made" > you know how much I made. You paid me "Right but I need you to tell me how much I paid you" > so you already know the answer "The point is compliance" She asks what happens if she gets the number wrong "Penalty" > from the money I don't have because you already spent it? "We could set up a payment plan" > I'm 8 "Monthly installments. Very manageable" > you're going to penalize me for getting wrong a number you already know and then make me pay you back with money you took from me "Now you're getting it" > I want to talk to mom "Mom's not a qualified representative. She can't help you here" She stormed off to her room saying how this is extortion Slammed the door That's my little citizen I've never been more proud

It's about four years ago, late July, about a week before the XC season officially starts. My new assistant coach asked me, "Where can I find the team rules document? I want to know what to enforce." "I don't really have one." She looked confused. "Wait, seriously? How do the kids know what's expected?" "They know." "But… how?" I thought about it. "We set an Impossible Goal in August. I explain the training philosophy. I tell them what excellence requires. Then they decide if they're in or they're out." "That's it?" "Pretty much." "So what happens when someone breaks a rule?" "What rule?" She's staring at me now. "Like… showing up late, missing practice, not working hard." "If you understand the goal, those things become obvious misalignments. The team handles it. I don't have to." "But don't you need, like, written standards?" I shrugged. "Standards are lived, not laminated." She wrote that down. Still not sure she believed me.

Kid showed up 10 minutes late to practice last Thursday. Freshman. Third week on the team. Still learning how everything works. I didn't say anything. Just moved the practice forward without him. He jogged up, quiet, and slid into the back of the group. Everyone kept moving. During the cool-down, I saw two of our leaders pull him aside by the fence. Couldn't hear what they said. Didn't need to. Just watched them talk — calm, serious, no raised voices. The kid nodding. Listening. Thursday afternoon, 4:47 PM, my phone buzzes: "Won't happen again, Coach. My bad." I never tell new coaches this is what's possible because they don't believe me. They think you have to enforce everything. Make the call on every situation. Be the one who holds the line. But when your architecture is clear — when everyone understands what the goal demands — the team regulates itself. Those leaders weren't doing me a favor. They were protecting something they built. I don't police alignment. The standard does.
