NEW: What started as a shots fired call on Union Street in New Britain Connecticut turned into a foot chase and an officer-involved shooting within minutes - police arrived to shell casings scattered in the street and bullet holes riddling a residence, and just nine minutes later a separate call came in about two masked males acting suspicious near a TD Bank on Main Street. When officers approached, both took off running into a Red Roof Inn parking lot, sparking a chase on bike and on foot that ended in a parking lot near Herald Square. That is where one of the suspects turned and fired a shot directly at Detective Nedderman, who returned fire and struck him multiple times. A handgun and shell casing were recovered right where he went down, and he is expected to survive after surgery. The second suspect, 18-year-old Ossain Gayle, was tackled and taken into custody by an officer who chased him down on a bicycle, with a high capacity magazine recovered on him as well. The 17-year-old shooter is now facing attempted assault and multiple firearm charges as a juvenile. These officers ran straight into gunfire to protect their community and that detective is lucky to be standing here tonight. Do you think you can do this job? A woman got pulled over on a New Jersey highway and instead of just handling the stop she pulled out her phone and started recording the entire interaction, and now this video has people debating what the smartest move really is when those blue lights come on behind you on one of the busiest highways in the country. Look, you absolutely have the legal right to record a traffic stop, but recording and complying are not mutually exclusive - you can do both at the same time. Personally I keep it simple, hands visible, comply with what the officer asks, and let the situation de-escalate naturally rather than turning a routine stop into a confrontation, especially with traffic flying by at highway speed just feet away. Filming everything while arguing or refusing instructions is how a five minute stop turns into something far worse. Document if you want, that’s your right, but compliance first always gives you the best chance of walking away from that interaction the same way you walked into it. I watched this almost turn into a tragedy today.
