@SheaMizer Trainers cried and moaned for years for a level playing field, and got HISA. Now, everyone is still bitching about vet scratches. Blame the trainers and whomever else, for the state of races. Cant have your cake and eat it too.

This is the precise reason that I quit trying to move my stable to Kentucky in the summer. Too much work and money gets wasted off the opinion of a bureaucrat. At least the big boys are having to experience it too, not that it brings me any happiness….

So Nick Smith & his team scratched John Hancock this morning after looking at him for 30 min. & multiple jogs bc it was not obvious to them. He has not run in 365+ days, passed the vet test in Fla. to run two weeks ago, & passed the blood test. But here is a question. Ky average catastrophic breakdown in 2025 was 1.24/1000 starts. National average was 1.04/1000 for 17% improvement over Kentucky. If Nick Smith and his team are doing such a great job, then why is the breakdown rate higher in Kentucky when he scratches twice as many horses? 💁♂️

@BillGossage It comes to this personal property rights in my opinion. I’ve always held myself to higher standards, probably to the detriment of my business. The trainer job holds a lot of accountability, with a lot of other people making the decisions.

@BillGossage At this point it’s I don’t know if it can be fixed. In the old days, the problem used to police itself, nobody wanted to send horses to trainers that were known to break horses down. The public thinks the connections are rewarded for these tragedies, and that’s not the case.

There should be accountability for those making these decisions. Based on what we know at this point, he was just guessing. What is the standard? Can anyone tell me? Obviously he has been working out for months. It’s ok to workout but not race? Where is the logic? To my knowledge there is no “part two” where the horse is taken to a third party vet to validate or refute the opinion of this individual.

@SheaMizer Small ops have ZERO chance in KY, even from other jurisdictions. Besides, read the condition book. Cant run in KY for a tag unless a horse has run within the last 30 days inside the state. Go to WRD, or keep your rats at OP then go to PM. Facts are facts.

Obviously Kentucky is the toughest circuit in the country, but you can’t win if you get scratched, so I quit going. Same horses that win at Oaklawn get scratched there, makes a lot of sense.

Another top guy Eddie Plesa Jr is retiring. One by one we go , it’s a planned assault on the business which will survive with boutique meets with 40 or 50, 200 horse outfits. Our weakling Horseman organizations don’t lift a finger . Hisa / Hiwu with its selective prosecution has done their job well.
