(2/2)...becomes worth every single moment when their face lights up and they run over to hug you and say "I can't believe you came to my graduation!" The laughter, tears, and joy of that celebration reminds us why we keep on teaching.

(1/2) All the struggles, the frustration, the "don't give up" (not just to them but ourselves sometimes), the parent phones calls and meetings, the late nights grading, the after-school extra math help, and "when will I need this in real life?"....

This is a great example of why the world of math and engineering needs diversity in order for society to progress. Math is more than "being a nerd", it's about identifying and solving real-world problems, and different perspectives to bring innovation. nytimes.com/2023/03/03/spo…

Both my kids’ high school teachers are teaching “cross-multiplication “, and of course not showing why you can do it. 🙈

@Math_World_ The vertex marked on the square is where x=y, since it's also a point on the line y=-3x+12 then it occurs at the solution to x=-3x+12. That's x=3, thus the square has side length of 3, and area of 9. I like this problem! I might use it as a warm-up challenge!

Oof, hard hitting message but true! And sometimes it's easy to overlook the needs of quiet students, but they sometimes need the most care.

Hey @BurgerKing ....is there anyway I could request one of those "221,184 ways to order a Whopper" posters for my classroom? I teach math and I'd love to use it for an example of calculating combinations....and free advertising for you so that's a fair trade, right? :-)

L.R. Knost is always spot on with parenting lessons but even things meant for young children are true for teenagers as well. I find that with some students "ask instead of demand" can go a long way, sometimes it's hard to remember when things get frustrating, but we all try.

@howie_hua Personally prefer in pen. I do encourage students to use pencils though but I don't prevent them from using pens since I have my own bias to prefer it. My thought is I'd rather evaluate and correct errors than erase and hide them.

I don't mean to start any drama or anything but do you prefer doing math in pen or in pencil?
