@Homeschool_LLC I've watched home school kids enter public school for over 30 years...they look much like all kids, to be honest. Some are superstars and it's amazing what they know and can do. Some are hot messes. And in between.

Public school teachers like to point out the homeschooled kids who return to public school as a benchmark for understanding homeschooling - oftentimes it represents a sample bias since successful homeschoolers rarely return to public school and homeschooling is their scapegoat for population failures. Meanwhile, generational failures of public school proficiency in all subjects is well documented.

California squirrels are eating rodents in broad daylight. In California’s Briones Regional Park, researchers observed a startling new behavior: California ground squirrels, typically known for eating nuts and seeds, are now hunting, killing, and consuming voles, a smaller rodent species in their habitat. A study in the Journal of Ethology documented 74 squirrel-vole interactions, with 42% involving squirrels stalking, pouncing on, and eating voles. This behavior, observed almost daily, marks the first recorded instance of widespread carnivory in this species. While squirrels have occasionally eaten insects or bird eggs, actively hunting warm-blooded prey is unprecedented. Student-recorded videos show squirrels chasing voles, restraining them with forepaws, biting their necks, and consuming their flesh or organs. The behavior may stem from a vole population surge—nearly seven times the state’s ten-year average—prompting squirrels to exploit this abundant protein source. Squirrels of all ages and sexes participated, suggesting a potential lasting adaptation. It’s unclear if this carnivorous trend will continue once vole numbers normalize, but the discovery reveals the surprising adaptability of even well-known animals. “BuT hOw WiLL kIdS LEarN wiTHouT a QuALifiED TeACheR?” First, assume your child has a brain, an ability to be curious, and a desire to pursue his rational self-interests. Add to that parents who have a natural vested interest in their children’s future.

@Perma_Paths @GreenGoesLeft We had an oasis of biodiversity in the middle of a major city. One of the side effects was that it attracted birds, insects and animals not previously seen in our area. Such as a Bald Eagle in my backyard which the director of the local Audubon Society claimed was “impossible.”

Exactly. There’s a famous story that Bill Mollison used to tell. People would visit his place to see his vegetable garden. When they arrived, they would walk into what felt like a jungle. At some point, they would stop and ask, “So, Bill, where is your garden?” And he would reply, “You’ve just walked through it!”

People often don’t understand that they’re looking at a garden at all when they see my backyard. They assume it is some kind of eccentric jungle themed backyard park, or really weird decorative landscaping.
Permaculture Paths@Perma_Paths

But what if your garden wasn't a production line at all It could be a flywheel—a system that, once set in motion with intelligence and design, builds its own momentum and becomes easier to operate with each rotation.

@dissidntdad We decided no social media, phones or screens in front of our daughter. We didn’t want her memories of us to be always online. As a result we spent more quality time together & have a stronger bond than any of our friends with their kids. (I didn’t get a phone until she was 14).

If one of your children was obviously gifted, would homeschooling still be the best option? Or would private school help them more?

@beautyofheaven_ @TiffaniMarie483 I have some experience. But that doesn’t really answer my question. Why specifically are opposed to the option of homeschooling across the board? I’m just trying to understand.

@6Shittalkerffs My biggest weakness as a farmer, I simply cannot bring myself to ship these old matriarchs. I’d rather shoot them in the head and slog through a week of butchery than put them in a truck and have their last days be uncertain after a lifetime of dedication to my farm.

Sooooo The rest of the story I cried all night after I posted this. Not a sound financial decision.. but I went Back to the sale barn and got her back. Today at 1530 she gave birth to a fancy F1 heifer. Her 12th calf. The Kid watched it be born. If she grows up with Momma’s attitude she will ne a keeper. 421 isn’t just a cow.

This afternoon I dropped open cows off at the sale barn. I turned and looked at them one last time. She stood patiently looking at me "Now what Mom"? My heart broke, I bit my bottom lip as hard as I could to not cry in front of the sale barn worker.  She was more than just a cow.  She was born February 4th 2014 at 9pm to a first calf heifer #21. #21 was a calm, patient heifer. Her little heifer calf was struggling to latch and it was COLD! Putting momma in the head gate was not an option, I got in and grabbed the calf and prayed I would get the shit kicked out of me. I got the calf to latch and soon momma was licking me to the point she licked my stocking cap off. She was always calm and quiet. As a calf she would walk up and I could boop her nose. Boop #421 stayed on as a replacement heifer. She never missed a calving season, until this year 2025. She blessed me with two sets of twins. Boop calved 5 bull calves and 6 heifer calves. I only kept one daughter out of her and she is currently bred with her second calf. #121 is lovingly called Feedlot (she's fat year around).  Boop was the confidence cow. She trusted me and I trusted her. I could walk the herd anywhere with her at my side. I could call "come on girls" and she always came.  She was more than just a cow.  She's been a part of my life for 11 years, 1 month and 21 days.

@ClassicLearner In 1941 (I believe) an illiterate Navajo woman, who had never set foot in a classroom, identified over 800 insects - many of which were completely unknown to the two University entomologists who hired her to guide them.

How will your child learn science if he is homeschooled? Meanwhile… “Thomas Edison was Homeschooled after his mom pulled him from school at age 7 because the teachers had labeled him “difficult due to his hyperactivity.” Homeschool your kids.
