Former journalist here. Successful journalism is always provocative. In many ways, the @VanityFair article on crypto is a masterclass in storytelling; it doesn't resonate with CT because it wasn't intended for us. We weren't the implied audience. The whole article is framed in a way where Vanity Fair positions themselves as the adult in the room, and the entire crypto industry is like the impatient child at the table. The choices in colour grading, composition and profiling in the accompanying photography for the piece says a lot too. I saw someone write it felt very '2018' and I hard agree. Look, I have a lot of thoughts, but.. There's one sentence I really want to highlight and talk about. Molot writes: "Shortly after, COVID hit. Bored at home, a generation of young men flooded into the online universe of crypto, and NFTs took off." That one line is doing a LOT of reductive work. The entire 2019-2021 period of crypto development was so much more then some young men, bored at home. The NFT bull run post-covid was the resulting consumer layer of an ecosystem that DeFi Summer had already technically matured and built. New monthly crypto developers grew 15% in 2020, the first major increase since 2017. Electric Capital fingerprinted 27,000+ code repositories and 22 million code commits in the firm’s H1 2019 Developer Report. Their report in 2019 identified that 18% of all open-source crypto developers worked in the Ethereum ecosystem. At that time, Ethereum had 4x more devs than any other ecosystem, including Bitcoin. By 2021, 34,000 new developers had entered Web3. Over the course of 2020 alone, TVL across DeFi protocols grew from $700 million to $15 billion representing a huge expansion in critical infrastructure including borrowing, lending, decentralised exchanges, yield farming, and other products/services. No one who was actually there or tracked what happened in 2020 would write the sentence Molot did. But for a Vanity Fair reader who has always suspected that crypto is fundamentally silly, it confirms everything they already believe, without requiring them to interrogate any data. In the same month where Mastercard's Crypto Partner Program was announced, the SEC ruled 18 cryptocurrencies as digital commodities, and as Hyperliquid crossed $1.2B 24h trading volume on CL-USDC during the war... Vanity Fair's contribution to the conversation was this. Ironically, and I think intentionally, this article reinforces the narrative that crypto isn't really taken seriously still... yet. This was a masterclass in storytelling. Just not about crypto as it actually exists in 2026. If this article missed for you like it did for me, it's because it wasn't for us. My wish for International Women’s Day: Look around the room and question who is there. If you find yourself in a room, on a cap table, board, or team - and there are no women, or very few, make note and try to change it. Ask yourself why and be ok following the answer to its uncomfortable conclusion. It’s not normal for women to be treated like endangered species at work.
