In this exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18's Rachna Dhanrajani, Mercedes-Benz India MD Santosh Iyer breaks down who the V-Class is really for, whether prices could move in a post-FTA world, and how the company is thinking about localisation, competition and the future of electric luxury vans in India. Is India ready to swap sedans for chauffeur-driven luxury MPVs?

VIDEO | At the launch of Mercedes-Benz V-Class luxury MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), Mercedes-Benz India MD & CEO Santosh Iyer says the idea behind this was liking of Indian consumers to travel with family, informing that the product has also been localised.
He says, "So, if you see, India is a market where consumers also like to travel with families a lot. On the other side, a lot of our consumers spend a lot of time in traffic, and they all want a personal space as such. So, if you look at these two, and the van market also seem to be growing, so our customers always demanded, they have been driving Mercedes-Benz vans when they travel to Europe or US. So they used to tell us when are you getting this car as well to India. So for us, we wanted to get the right product. So we have made all the changes in the product which is specific to India like the airmatic suspensions etc. And then to get the pricing right, we have also decided to localise the car in India. So we are able to offer the van at a 1.4 crore pricing. So I think, the customer demand on one side along with a vacant white spot that we saw for a customer because most of these customers would be our current customers of Mercedes-Benz, all our luxury car customers who want a van also in their garage."
When asked how does he evaluate the performance of the new V-Class, he says, "I think what we have done is we have given both the powertrains, petrol and diesel along with this we have also given as I said airmatic suspension so that the ride comfort is great, also when you look at the seating inside all luxury seats first class seats ventilated seats plus the highest level of safety, you know this is, I could easily say the safest car in the segment seven odd airbags plus NCAP of 95% so I think it ticks all the right boxes."

Take a long at the extra long wheelbase @MercedesBenzInd V-Class. At an introductory price of ₹1.4 crore, thanks to being assembled at Chakan, this vehicle is available in both petrol and diesel options equipped with ‘Airmatic’ suspension that offers a smooth ride over the worst roads.
Available as a six-seat three-row vehicle, the third row also gets ventilated seats (a first for MPVs) the ‘Private Suite’ as Mercedes-Benz calls it can be configured in multiple ways. Like this insanely spacious two-row variant that makes the largest first class cabins onboard an A380 loom positively small in comparison.
