🇮🇷 Iran is trying to bypass international law in the Strait of Hormuz. They say there’s no toll, just “service fees” for navigation and “ecosystem preservation” charged by the IRGC. Shipping companies are calling it a straight up tax. Here’s the key: Under UNCLOS Article 26, coastal states can only charge for specific services actually rendered, and it must be non-discriminatory. You can’t legally fee ships just for passing through an international strait. Iran never ratified UNCLOS, so they claim they’re not bound by it and are using that loophole to justify the fees while flexing leverage at the Doha talks. Even a small fee per ship could bring Iran hundreds of millions quickly. Some tankers have reportedly already paid 6-figure sums.
