When you get into the hotel and convention space for venues, the landscape of expenses changes. Services such as venue, AV, power, and internet have dedicated vendors that you either have to negotiate with separately or packaged; depending on venue and venue manager. Every integral piece has a cost/fee with either a day or hourly rate. This includes tables, chairs, water service, security, scanners, internet speed, internet drops, power, power drops, HVAC, overnight security, dividing walls, loading dock services/access, etc. The more line items you tack on and the more days your event are, the more of a discount you can negotiate. However, even with discount, it's a still a rising cost. During the convention-based SCR years, the cost for 26-32Mbps was about $28,000. Welcome to my Ted Talk.

The idea of creating Level Up came to me as I sat at work at the end of day, watching the Street Fighter IV trailer that just dropped. The root of the idea stemmed from my past years during the late 90s, early 2000s arcade era where I captured direct feed footage of CVS, CVS2, and MVC2 tournaments, edited them, and distributed them via shoryuken.com and VHS. There was no YouTube at that time and tournament footage was secretive and very hard to come by. Knowing that I wouldn’t have a lot of time to dedicate to fighting games like the top players, I decided to focus on building the FGC my own way in SoCal; specifically, at Southern Hills Golfland. Perhaps it was selfish of me, but I didn’t care too much about sandbagging or keeping SHGL territorial and by word of mouth only. I wanted to build upon the allure of SHGL by showing the world the caliber of players we had and that it was the place to come play. What better way to do this other than sharing footage of the monthly tournaments. After only a few months’ worth of footage being shared, what transpired was a revolution in content sharing and exposure that, in my opinion, pushed the FGC forward exponentially. Week after week, month after month, communities across the states wanted more. I shared more. Eventually, I came to realize that the Japan FGC was also watching my footage when several players at EVO 2002 came up to me and asked, “Are you ShinJN?” I said, “Yes,” and they reacted with excitement and thanked me for showing them American playstyles and how strong SHGL was. I would like to believe that my footage, my way of building the community at that time, lead others in the FGC to do the same and openly share their footage as well, contributing to the growing network of connected players and arcades. I shared content for several years until I decided to focus on graduating college. Then the arcades started closing and that chapter of my life closed at that time, though I did stay active on EVO staff from 2001-2009. These memories and experiences flashed in my eyes when I was watching the SFIV trailer in 2008. It was these moments and accomplishments that started my journey of creating Level Up; starting a new chapter of building the Fighting Game Community. My FGC origin story started in 1991 with Street Fighter II. The next chapter started with a Sony Digital 8 camcorder. My coming of age began when I started Level Up. It’s a series of stories of a behind-the-scenes guy I hope to share in full someday.

My condolences to the family of SAULABIS and the Korean FGC. I had the pleasure of working with Baek the past several years on World Warrior. He was great to work with and showed a lot of heart, love, and passion along with great motivation for cultivating his region. He will be missed.

My wife bought my a pair of Rayneo air 2 "AR" glasses for my birthday. So sick. Like having a 201 inch screen in your face. 120hz. Been using it on steamdeck and movies a lot. Just finished playing sf6 on it, no problem. It's pretty awesome
