I was thinking about this overnight and came to a funny realization. In a desperate attempt at a gotcha, this dude dug up an old version of Penny to somehow prove AI art is better Penny started as a throwaway NPC for a tabletop campaign I ran in the same universe as my game. The only notes I had written down were “goth cowgirl.” My girlfriend at the time instantly latched onto her Together we made her a family, her backstory, and her personality. She was the one who first designed her, then I modelled her, added her into the game, and she drew the face atlas on this model herself She only exists because myself and the person i loved bounced ideas off each other, and now she’s probably my most popular character and has received more fanart than almost anyone else I’ve made Even though we aren’t part of each other’s lives anymore, she wanted me to keep Penny and take care of her, because she still represents an important part of my life That’s the part I think is genuinely tragic about generative AI, people using it will never understand what that feels like and have robbed themselves of that experience Creating things with people you love is fulfilling in a way you cannot fake. You learn together, you grow together, and leave parts of yourselves in the work So yeah, you can sit there smugly picking apart imperfections in old sketches and models from years ago Alone Pressing a button to imitate the final result Learning nothing, building nothing, sharing nothing, saying nothing, collaborating with no one And laugh to yourself about how much smarter you are than me

Some have come back and said “how about now?” And when I explain I’m not paying for what they called fanart, they always try to explain they’re not doing well financially and need extra income. Lol buddy I’m not doing well financially either. And if you approach me like that, I’ll likely *never* commission you— neither will others you do that to. Let them come to you. Same energy as this, tbh.
