🚨BREAKING Essex police have TURNED OFF their live facial recognition cameras as they were catching too many black people 🇬🇧 They have also admitted that it was EXTREMELY rare the cameras would pick somebody up who WASN’T on the watchlist. They put up cameras to catch bad people, the cameras caught the bad people who happened to be predominantly black so they turned the cameras off 😑

They claim it was paused because it was catching so many black criminals, which was not the reason it was due to an inherent racial bias that I believe did not warrant pausing it.

@Shoomus_ @Babygravy9 Absolutely. It's picking up criminals. That's good for all of us. And while it is picking up criminals, we can work on any shortfalls in the system's training data that might make it less efficient at detecting certain physiologies.

But that is not true the system was proven to have an inherent bias that in comparable criminals only identified black ones.

@frankinsensible @Babygravy9 I know it fits your world view that all black people are big bad criminals but having a system that picks up a certain ethnic group over others is not a good system, just as it wouldn't be good if it overly picked up Whites or Asian people.
