@FlirtyDawg ABS, you can weld it with acetone but it's usually not worth it. PLA, use epoxy but the strength is compromised. How big is it? I'm gang running prints on my big resin printers this week and I can get you fam. Trade for a paw later or something 😘

I’ve always wanted to try astrophotography so I finally bought a smart telescope as a stepping stone into it because it’s fairly easy to use and good for beginners I got to use it 2 times because its been raining / cloudy and gray every damn day 🫥 sad

@EvilPleasureToy Definitely. Same with Shore D. Also huge difference between Amazon special, "calibrated", and actually comes with a NIST cert calibrated. Like $50->$150->$5000

@ShopDad2 I feel it, As far as Shore A is concerned, I have no problem getting hold of an inexpensive (uncalibrated) measuring device, but Shore 00 can be really expensive

Theres a problem with citing ASTM standards in our industry: This is my calibrated Shore 00 firmness tester and standards set. Tools like this can cost thousands of dollars...and yet...

@squishy_toys With my viscometer I'm timing it as 5 minutes before 100k viscosity instead of using the pokey stick method. That gives bubbles time to reach the surface before it's fully a goo.

@MenagerieToys What helps a lot are casting nice flat test plaques. I made molds for 7mm deep squares and now I can get maybe +/-3 pretty reliably. Still, even if this was perfectly repeatable, it's not really measuring how the silicone *feels* (preloads & viscoelastic)

@ShopDad2 I picked up a digital shore OO tester recently and yeah, everything you just explained is more or less exactly what I discovered too. The margin is quite wide and relies on me applying the meter perfectly each time.

..to completion they slow down. The last 5% can happen over days/weeks even if the initial reaction took only a few minutes. This is why old toys are firmer than freshly pulled ones and why using brand new silicone that hasn't had time to age in the bucket sometimes acts funky.

If you want a wild one: not just storage temperature but storage time. Intuitively we think about things going BAD over time but did yall know silicones can be kind of funky if they aren't old enough? Chemical reactions are not linear. As they get closer..

@ShopDad2 I work in construction materials testing, and ASTM standards are the bane of my existence. AASHTO is worse.

You can Google that one and find enough excerpts to get an idea of how wildly inaccurate it can be. This is from the now retracted 2471-99. Anyways, I love ASTM. I appreciate their work. I just needed a lil rant on perception vs reality of the data we see in TDs

ASTM2240 is the one we are supposed to use for firmness btw. Another one that drives me bonkers is ASTM2471. That's for potlife / working life. A surprisingly accurate explanation is "poke the goo with a stick and when the stick comes out clean that's pot life"
