In 2023, a friend of mine met a girl and fell madly in love. At the time, she was working in Lilongwe while he was based in Blantyre, and what started as something simple quickly became intense. She liked him too, and before long they were deeply involved, but distance became a problem as he was always travelling. So he made a bold proposal: he asked her to relocate to Blantyre and quit her job, where she was earning north of MK300,000 as her take home salary, promising to pay her double just for being his girlfriend so they could be closer. She agreed, but refused to cohabit, insisting on having her own space, so he promised to pay her rent and even buy her a car. In March 2024, she took the leap, left her job, and moved cities, trusting his word. True to it, he started paying her over MK700,000 monthly and bought her a car, and for a while everything felt perfect. But things eventually fell apart, as they often do; they broke up, and just like that, the promises stopped. For months now, he hasn’t been paying her rent or the money he committed to. Today, it escalated. He received letters from her lawyers stating her intention to sue if he does not continue paying her rent, salary, and arrears until she finds another job. What once felt like love and generosity has now turned into a legal battle, so guys, just be careful about the decisions you make when you’re in love and excited!
