Interview Experience #2 — Groww (Frontend Engineering Intern) Organisation: @_groww Role: Frontend Engineering Internship Compensation: ₹50,000 / month Location: Bangalore (On-site) Duration: 6 Months Rounds: 2 Application: I remember filling out a Google Form shared by Groww’s HR on LinkedIn—and I applied immediately after it was posted. Background Before this process, I had zero experience with React. However, I was comfortable with JavaScript and had a strong grasp of the language—thanks to Akshay Saini and the 30 Days, 30 JavaScript Projects challenge. Round 1: Frontend Assignment Timeline: 3–4 days I worked day and night learning React from scratch and implementing the required features. I used GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT extensively during this phase—but made sure I clearly understood the purpose of every function and concept I used. Verdict: They liked the assignment and its functionality, and I was shortlisted for the interview. Round 2: Technical Interview Duration: ~2.5 hours (could extend) This was a very deep technical round, divided into four parts: - Introduction & Resume Discussion - Deep Dive into the Assignment - In-depth React / Next.js Discussion - DSA Question Part 1: Introduction & Resume Discussion The interviewer introduced himself, asked about me, and walked through my resume. I gave a high-level overview of my projects and explained them clearly. He seemed satisfied with this part. Part 2: Assignment Deep Dive I opened the assignment and explained every feature I had implemented. We then went into the actual codebase, where he: - Asked me to explain the flow of the code - Pointed out specific features and asked where and how I implemented them I was able to explain everything properly, and he seemed satisfied. He then asked me to implement a feature in a new file, with Copilot turned off. I wasn’t able to code it fully, but I explained the logic clearly and was honest about relying on AI for implementation—which he was okay with. Part 3: Deep Dive into React This was the most challenging part. He started with common React interview questions (mostly from popular React repositories), which I was able to answer—mainly because I had memorized them during the 4-day gap. However, he then started: - Diving deeper into my answers - Picking specific terms I mentioned and asking how they are actually used in real-world applications This is where I struggled—mainly due to a lack of real development experience. He then moved to: - Scenario-based questions on SSR vs CSR - React code-output questions I answered the basic ones but failed on the trickier cases. He seemed clearly disappointed at this point. Next, he asked me to implement a custom polling hook. I understood the concept (since I had used custom hooks in my assignment), but again struggled to write the code. He allowed me to use React Docs only (no AI, no Google search). With multiple hints from him, I eventually implemented it. He seemed okay-ish, and then told me we were done with this part. DSA Section (That Never Happened) With a big smile, I said: “Let’s move to the DSA part, sir.” He replied: “After seeing your profiles, I know you’ll be able to solve the questions I would ask—so we won’t be doing it.” My smile slowly faded. Closing Conversation He asked if I had any questions. I asked: 1. About Groww 2. For honest feedback (he said HR would share it) I then explained my situation—my frontend journey and my CP background. He listened very calmly and said (with a slight smile): “You’re good, Pushkar. You’d be a better fit for a backend role at Groww. But for this role, we need someone who can contribute from Day 1—we’re a fast-moving startup.” I fully respected that, and the interview ended. Feedback & Result The very next day, HR shared a detailed and honest feedback: - Knowledge gaps in frontend fundamentals - Lack of real-world frontend development experience I genuinely appreciated this transparency. Result: Not selected for this role. I asked about backend openings, and she mentioned that the feedback clearly says I’d be a good fit—and she’d reach out if such an opportunity opens up. Learnings If you’re applying for a dev role at a strong startup, what truly matters is: - Depth of skill - Real, hands-on experience in that tech stack Be prepared—not just theoretically, but practically. Final Thoughts This was a very positive experience and one of the finest interview loops I’ve had. Thank you, @_groww 🙌 Follow me for more real interview experiences and honest learnings. Drop your doubts in the comments—I’ll try to answer them all. Also, comment “Assignment” if you want the problem statement of the frontend assignment.
