Teachers like this when I was in school drilled the southern accent out of me. Claiming a southern accent was a sign of ignorance! It’s not! Of course others bullied me too; it caused me to code switch to general American accent in the presence of others like Clover states. Recently, I’ve been more comfortable with sharing my accent in small sprinkles, but the things that were drilled into my head are still there!
