Yet, despite displacement, families continue to gather to pray, share iftar and hold on to hope for peace and a safe, dignified return home one day. Refugees, local authorities and partners, we keep working together to improve living conditions, from access to basic services to creating opportunities that restore dignity and choice. In Malakal, I met with local authorities & displaced families embracing durable solutions. Through farming cooperatives, they are putting food on tables & supplying local markets. In Hai Matar, families that were displaced now have land rights & access to building materials.

It will be interesting to monitor the progress of this initiative. Self-reliance programmes for refugee-populated areas have a very patchy record.

In Yambio’s Makpandu refugee camp, #UNHCR helps refugees access land, farming equipment and good farming practices. This enables families to grow food for their families and sell surplus in the market. Refugee women now cultivate rice and use profits to start a savings group.
