Demon Slayer, Chapter 42 The cover tagline: “A blade strikes the wind.” I imagine this kind of tagline is probably written by the editor, but Demon Slayer really makes me feel that it’s not only Gotouge-sensei who has extraordinary artistic sense — the people around the series do too. Putting the anime aside, what especially impresses me is the book cover design, but I’ll save that for another time. When I first saw this line, I didn’t think much of it. But looking at it again now, I feel like the phrase “A blade strikes the wind” captures Giyuu Tomioka’s Nagi extremely well. To begin with, “nagi” refers to the state of the sea or a lake when the wind dies down, the waves disappear, and the surface becomes calm like a mirror. So in this context, “wind” does not simply mean moving air — it seems to refer to the opponent’s slashes or attacks themselves. And yet, what’s so interesting is that the phrase does not say the blade “cuts” the wind, but “strikes” it. That part is especially fascinating to me. Up until now, I’d kind of interpreted Nagi as a brute-force technique that just smacks away every incoming attack one after another, but when I think about it again, that interpretation feels far too lacking in elegance. Giyuu’s technique is something he arrived at only after refining it to the absolute limit — it feels like the very pinnacle of swordsmanship — so I think it’s about time I corrected my own understanding of it 🤭 The word “strikes” carries the nuance of meeting something head-on with precise intent, and of bringing it down with perfect accuracy the very moment it appears. So to me, “A blade strikes the wind” suggests this: even something as elusive as the wind — something that should be impossible to catch or stop — is quietly brought down before Giyuu’s blade. It’s so cool it gives me chills. It isn’t a sword that boasts violence or force. Rather, it is a sword of pure stillness — one that meets every disturbance by silencing it in an instant. At first glance, it looks as though he is simply and quietly deflecting the opponent’s attacks. But in truth, there is something fierce held deep within that stillness. And that feels so very true to who Giyuu is as a character. That’s why I think Nagi is his very essence. “A blade strikes the wind.” It’s just so unbelievably cool. And now here I am, quietly losing my mind over it by myself.
