NFF Attends National Workshop on Small-Scale Fisheries in West Bengal West Bengal: The National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) participated in a two-day national workshop on “Aligning India’s National Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries with the Global SSF Process” at Narendrapur, West Bengal. The workshop, organised by the Institute for Motivating Self Employment (IMSE) and East Coast Fish Workers Union (ECFWU), brought together fishworkers’ organisations, trade unions, researchers, and civil society groups. Speaking at the event, NFF General Secretary Olencio Simoes emphasized the urgent need to implement the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Small-Scale Fisheries (VGSSF), endorsed by India in 2014 but still pending execution. He highlighted challenges like livelihood losses due to climate change, destructive fishing, and unplanned coastal development. The NFF called for inclusive, rights-based policy implementation and expressed readiness to cooperate with the government to safeguard fishers’ livelihoods and rights. #NFF #SmallScaleFisheries #GoaNews #OlencioSimoes #WestBengal #VGSSF #FisherfolkRights #Goemkarponn #NationalWorkshop

We strongly condemn the heinous and cowardly attack on social activist Rama who was assaulted with swords in broad daylight. This shocking incident reflects a complete collapse of the law-and-order machinery in the state.

Cortalim Congress Demands SIT Probe Into Student Deaths at BITS Pilani Goa Cortalim Congress leader Olencio Simoes has demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the disturbing and recurring student deaths at BITS Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus, where the fourth tragic death has occurred in less than a year. He stated that this alarming pattern has raised serious concerns among parents, students, and the general public. It is imperative to examine whether these incidents are linked to: Academic stress and institutional pressure Exposure to drugs or illegal substances Consumption of spurious/duplicate alcohol available around the campus area Simoes further stressed that these repeated incidents cannot be dismissed as isolated cases and may point to a larger systemic issue involving negligence, lack of monitoring, or possible illegal activities in and around the campus. Highlighting concerns about Sancaole becoming a hub of illegal activities such as gambling and prostitution, he urged that the safety and well-being of students must remain a top priority. According to him, only a neutral and thorough SIT probe can uncover the truth. #GoaNews #BITSGoa #SITProbe #OlencioSimoes #StudentSafety #Cortalim #CongressGoa #CampusSafety #GoaUpdates
