Not sure how long this will run for, but my NY resolution is to share books I’ve been reading. Expect lots of thrillers, with spies & history (and both) prominent in the mix.

It's called St Cuthbert's Day. We celebrated it every year at school. The flag bears his cross. He was so revered by King Æthelstan, the founder of our Kingdom, that the king made a pilgrimage to Durham to honour him. Renaming it "Durham Day" erases our history.
House of Commons Speaker@CommonsSpeaker

Happy Durham Day. The Durham flag is flying in New Palace Yard today to mark the county’s rich heritage. Durham City is one of the oldest constituencies in England.

This is such a great - and necessary - article. #Assistedsuicide campaigners prey upon the natural compassion of British people to manipulate polls about support for legislation but the more they know, the more they reject it. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/2…

Hello, there 👋 Have you heard David Lammy MP and Sarah Sackman MP talking about people stealing bottles of whisky and swiping mobile telephones as examples of people who should not get jury trials? Well. I’d like to tell you a story. 🪡 🧵

@RichardLehman1 Very interesting. Directly relevant to a relative’s regimes over the last 12 months.

That’s *a thousand people* in this country who are *annually* held by the Crown Court to have been not guilty when the Magistrates’ Court found them guilty. Think about the impact a criminal conviction can have on a life. A family. Then times that by a thousand. Every year.

Since I wrote this, the Bill has emerged & is even worse than feared. It also: - removes the automatic right of appeal from summary trials (whilst greatly increasing the number of them) - permits judges to declare most serious charges to be complex, requiring trial without jury

The UK ending almost all jury trials is a genuine "moment". I feel a "Please pinch me - I want to wake up now." sensation. It's like we abolished the monarchy - & then some. We're led by people who have no interest in or respect for the assembled wisdom of centuries.

I recently became one of the 12% of Britons to have sat on a jury that saw a case through to a verdict. And I endorse every word of this. One of the most powerful moments arrives after the summing up, when the usher swears … "I shall keep this jury in a private and convenient place. I shall suffer no one to speak to them nor shall I speak to them myself except with leave of the court, save to ask them whether they have agreed upon their verdict." Then, 12 random women and men become the still point of a turning world, upon whom justice patiently waits. Juries are civic magic — a secular miracle. They should be cherished beyond measure.

This from @Geoffrey_Cox was titanic - a truly beautiful speech. He outshone those sat opposite. They could only watch. And nervously laugh. This should be seen by every new MP to understand what they do, & every new barrister to understand what we do.

@HSJEditor This is such an important point. We circle the wagons far too quickly. Critiquing the systems & processes we work in does not imply bad intentions or criticism of individuals who have to work in them. Although we should be open to that too where merited.

I think there is a massive divide between the way NHS Twitter views the NHS and the way that normal people view it. I've had some wonderful experiences, but many more bad ones. Most of our friends say the same. My wife works for the NHS, as do 3 other immediate family members, and around 25% of my friends. They all say the same thing: yes, underfunding, but also obvious nonsense inefficiencies and things that could be easily fixed. But you dare to say anything online and you get called "stupid" a "moaner" or "a w*nk". People immediately assume you are criticising specific individuals, rather than the bad systems they work in. Legitimate grievances and frustrations are at best dismissed and at worse ridiculed. Not an ounce of reflection, and I suspect goodwill is running low. There was a time when genuinely everyone loved the NHS, and other than right wing libertarians you wouldn't hear a word against it. I suspect that's not the case anymore.
