A group of huge UK artists just accused the prime minister of failing to protect creatives’ human rights, by selling them out to AI companies.

This is how to govern fairly.
The Senator for New South Wales says the Australian government will not weaken copyright to benefit AI companies.
Other governments should take note.

Last year, I chaired a Senate inquiry into adopting AI, and one of our key recommendations was clear: Australia’s copyright laws must be enforced to ensure big tech fairly licenses and compensates artists, writers, and other creatives when their work is used to train AI models. Despite the Productivity Commission’s interim report, the Albanese Government has been clear - we stand with Australia’s creative workers and industries, and we will not compromise our copyright laws. If the Googles and Amazons of the world want to use Australia's extraordinary trove of written and recorded treasures, they can license and pay for it just like everyone else.
