People talk about animal fat being feared today.
They have not seen anything.
Britain, 1991. The fridge of a working family.
Skimmed milk, blue-top. Flora light, half-eaten. A second tub on the shelf, just in case. Six Müllerlights, pink, sweetened with aspartame. Low-fat ham, low-fat cheese slices, low-fat cottage cheese with pineapple. A box of egg whites, the yolks already discarded by the manufacturer. SnackWell's biscuits, fat-free, eaten by the entire box because the label said so.
Edwina Currie went on television in 1988 and announced the eggs had salmonella. Four million hens were slaughtered inside a fortnight. The advice that followed: eat the white, throw the yolk away.
The yolk was the food. The white was the packaging.
By 1995 the Department of Health was rationing eggs. Two per adult per week. A food that had fed every farming population for ten thousand years, portion-controlled by Whitehall on the basis of a cholesterol theory already collapsing in the journals.
Nobody told the public. The margarine industry was on every commercial break. Walking it back would have required admitting the decade was a mistake.
The decade was a mistake.
Obesity, 1990: 6%. 2020: 28%. Diabetes ran the same trajectory. The fat had been removed and the conditions it was meant to be causing had got worse.
Your mother is, statistically, still buying the Flora.
The butter is back at the butcher.
Nobody ever apologised.

@drnslomo @SamaHoole I think you guys call it ground beef, basically what the picture looks like
English

Fair enough. Four years of telling people to buy ground beef and I've finally made it as an elitist.
For the uninitiated: 500g of full-fat beef mince at Aldi. £2.49.
500g of chicken breast at Aldi. £3.29.
The beef is cheaper. The beef has more fat, more calories, more micronutrients, more zinc, more B12, more iron in a form your body can actually use.
The chicken breast is a dry, protein-forward slab that your body will largely use for energy because you didn't eat enough fat.
The ribeye discourse has always been aspirational content, not practical content. Ground beef has always been the prescription.
I've been saying buy the cheapest, fattiest beef in the supermarket for four years. I've said it so many times I considered having it printed on a lanyard.
TareanSmiley@TareanSmiley
@SamaHoole People aren't eating chicken instead of ribeye because of the fat content. They're eating chicken because of the price, mother @#$@%'er. What good is your advice if it only applies to royalty?

There’s some news in the Copenhagen drone saga I have to share.
The witness, an airport employee who first raised the drone alarm, has given an interview to a newspaper.
She has been questioned several times by the police, who brought in experts to analyze her video, and the conclusion was: That it was a plane!
Please share this video, we have to stop these lying politicians before the election!!

They said English culture doesn't exist.
They said it in English. 🏴
The most spoken language on Earth. Born on this island.
Fifteen hundred years ago, three tribes crossed the North Sea. Angles. Saxons. Jutes. They brought words we still use today.
Earth. Water. Fire. Love. Mother. Father. Child.
They called their language Englisc. They called this place Engla land. Land of the Angles.
Then the Vikings came. They didn't just raid. They settled. Became neighbours. And when you live next door to someone, your languages merge.
Sky. Skull. Knife. Window, the Viking for "wind-eye."
They. Them. Their. Those aren't English words. They're Viking. Ordinary people chose them because they worked better.
Then came 1066. The Normans conquered England. The new rulers spoke French. For three hundred years, English had no official status in its own country.
But the people never stopped speaking it.
The farmer called it a cow. The lord called it beef. Pig and pork. Sheep and mutton. That class divide is still on your plate tonight.
English didn't die. It swallowed ten thousand French words and came back stronger.
Today. One and a half billion people speak this language. Every pilot on Earth speaks it. Half the internet is written in it.
No academy designed it. No king commanded it. It was built by ordinary people. On this island.
They said English culture doesn't exist.
They said it in English.
You're the reason these stories reach millions of people. Not sponsors. Not ads. You.

🇬🇧 Rosebank is the biggest undeveloped oil field in the North Sea, and could extract a projected 500 million barrels of oil equivalent over its lifetime. That makes it almost triple the size of the controversial nearby Cambo oil field, which drew widespread protests and opposition in 2021 and was eventually paused.
Importing gas from halfway across the world has a carbon footprint three times higher than extracting it locally.
We’re outsourcing our wealth and our emissions to hostile regimes. Rosebank, about 80 miles northwest of the Shetland Islands, is massive: it’s estimated to contain between 300 million and 500 million barrels of oil equivalent. 🇬🇧
Tapping into this vast resource will stop our over dependence on foreign sources & help bring oil prices down.
Fly the flag, loud and proud 🇬🇧
