At the Inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV one year ago (as seen in this video), two key symbols were conferred: the Pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring. The Pallium is a woolen band worn over the shoulders. It symbolizes the Pope’s role as the universal shepherd, sharing in the pastoral care of Christ, the Good Shepherd. It also expresses communion with the bishops of the world and the unity of the Church. It is made from lamb’s wool to recall both the lost sheep Christ carries and the pastoral responsibility of guiding the flock with humility and sacrifice. Archbishops also wear pallium. The Fisherman’s Ring represents the Pope’s authority as the successor of St. Peter, the fisherman whom Christ called to “fish for men.” Historically, it is used to seal official papal documents, signifying authentic teaching and governance. It is both a sign of authority and of service - authority exercised in fidelity to Christ’s command to strengthen His brethren. So, together, the Pallium and the Ring express a deep truth: the Pope is called not to dominate, but to shepherd; not to rule as a worldly king, but to serve as the visible sign of unity and apostolic faith in the Church.
