For Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, that was Harry Osborn, who became the Green Goblin. But for Tom Holland, that friend hasn’t turned yet — and that’s where things get messed up. In the comics, Ned Leeds is a villain called the Hobgoblin. At first, that sounds like a stretch because he’s such a nice guy, but in Spider-Man: No Way Home, they all but confirmed he could turn evil. He randomly opens portals and mentions that magic runs in his family, which hints at powers that could be corrupted. He even says, “I promise you, I won’t turn into a supervillain and try to kill you.” But here’s the problem. At the end, Peter erases everyone’s memory of him — including Ned. So that promise doesn’t really mean anything anymore. And here’s the detail nobody talks about. The Hobgoblin is inspired by the Green Goblin… and after the final battle, the mask is left behind.
