Why INDIAN PARENTS prefer private schools over government schools despite exorbitant and arbitrary fee hikes?
If you visit 100 government schools you'll find almost all schools have same problems :
1st, Teacher's quality training and accountability issues —>
In government schools many teachers are undertrained. If you ask them even a little harder questions I guarantee you they won't answer them without taking 5 minutes and looking around.
Absenteeism, low motivation, administrative burdens, lack of proper monitoring etc are always seen in almost all govt schools.
2nd, High PTR due to teacher shortages —>
In government schools PTRs often exceed RTE norms that is 30:1, like Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh - 47:1
That we all understand higher PTRs lead to overcrowded classrooms and lack individual attention. This is one of the most important reasons due to which parents avoid sending their children to govt schools.
3rd, very poor infrastructure —>
This is also one of those reasons which leads to the choice of the expensive path toward private schools.
Many government schools in india lack even basic facilities like functional toilets, clean drinking water, electricity, quality libraries etc.
According to UDISE+ recent data, more than 4500 schools exist in india without functional toilets and clean drinking water and thousands without 8×6 electricity regularly.
4th is one of the most important reasons why Indian parents shifting to private schools —>
Over past few months thousands of government schools had to close due to declining enrollment.
According to data, approximately over 89000 government schools closed from 2014-15 and 2023-25.
In Utter Pradesh - over 25000 closures
In Madhya Pradesh - over 29000 closures
In Rajasthan - over 17000 closures
Apart from all these, there are several other reasons why people are increasingly distancing themselves from government schools such as, resources shortage, under funding and low learning outcomes.
One more thing is spreading rapidly among Indian parents regarding private schools —
The issue is that Indian parents feel a great sense of pride in sending their children to predatory private schools. They perceive this as a sign of their superior standard of living and accord not even an iota of respect to parents whose children attend government schools. In India, alongside reforming the education system, it is absolutely imperative to eradicate such an antisocial mindset.
We all must unite to bring reforms in Indian education system.
