The goal becomes documenting personal moral opposition rather than materially opposing the thing itself, and in the end, the performance centers the individual’s conscience and future reputation, not the urgency or gravity of the injustice being criticized. It’s exactly the posture MLK warned about in Letter from Birmingham Jail, the “white moderate” who “…is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.”
