Indeed. The takeover of the Ming by the Manchu Qing is a stark reminder of the costs of losing control of one's civilisation. I interviewed Dr Struve on this matter a few years ago, and the parallels to our times are too numerous to count

Many "modern historians" attempt to use the same kind of rug-pulling strategies they utilise against Western Civilisation against the foundations of China. 1. smearing. 2. deconstruction. 3. social construction. etc.

Western paranoia about China is almost all projection based on what they would do in the same position not based on Chinese mindset, character or actual actions.
English

@AcademicAgent_X Here's "Harvard Sinologist" Timothy Brook's utilizing all these methods.
Once one notices it, it's impossible to trust any of them.

English

@AcademicAgent_X It's both caused by and feeds into the constant undermining of Chinese history by "Western Sinologists". They use the same strategies they utilise against Western civilisation. 1. smearing. 2. deconstruction. 3. social construction, etc.

@begynnynge At this point, putting aside sentiment, that dragon wins. It's already inside the walls. Unless some miracle occurs...

@JrgenHuber7 @ScottBartB @kafkaswife That's only one example of the odd behaviours he engages in in that book. Here are some others: 1. self-reporting assistance of immigration fraud into the USA for the man known as Polat. 2Happening to stumble upon a local election. Hessler was in the Peace Corps (arm of US gov)

@JrgenHuber7 @ScottBartB @kafkaswife Do control yourself and refrain from throwing around words haphazardly like "puritan". It will lose its meaning if you do that. I used to think like you. I re-read it after 20 years and some much-needed life experience. The writing is good, no doubt, the actions less so.
English

@SinoLityoutube @ScottBartB @kafkaswife You're a pure puritan, aren't you. That's why Peter Hessler is so outstanding, he gets his students to talk about their experiences with going to the big cities. These are no kids!
English

@JrgenHuber7 @ScottBartB @kafkaswife let's say a teacher from the "Confucius Institute" (arm of PRC) engaged in those behaviours with a bunch of young female students in the USA, kept in contact with them long after they left school and read their diaries. We'd all agree that was inappropriate at best

@ScottBartB @JrgenHuber7 @kafkaswife nothing was winsinuated. It's all in plain sight, self-reported activity of what the writer did during the writing of the book. Make of it what you will. I tried to be charitable and say it was "inappropriate"

@chroniclesXY @kafkaswife Hessler is overrated. Oracle Bones is a very strange book.

@kafkaswife Peter Hessler's books!
Henry Kissinger's On China is also very good.
English

@ScottBartB @kafkaswife Hessler's Oracle Bones is a very odd book on a second read. Why does he have such close relationships with very young female students (reading their diaries and calling them, etc.)? Inappropriate at best.
