Here is what I would tell a younger me starting out as a remote worker. 1. Get knowledge first. Real knowledge. Not the scattered kind where you watch three YouTube videos and feel ready. I mean deep, structured, intentional learning from someone who has actually done what you want to do. YouTube and free resources will give you a foundation and there is nothing wrong with starting there. But there is a level of clarity, shortcut and direction that comes from paid training from a trusted person that free content simply cannot replicate. You are not just buying information. You are buying a faster path. Invest in it early and stop feeling guilty about it. 2. Then practice what you learned before you think you are ready. Do not wait until you feel confident because that day takes forever to come. Find a real business, a small brand, a local service provider, anyone operating legitimately and offer to do the work for free or at a steep discount. Not because your time is not valuable but because you need proof that your skills work in the real world and not just in your head. That experience will teach you more than any course ever will and it gives you something to show the next person who asks what you have done. 3. After that get intentional about your offer. Decide who you actually want to work with and what you want to do for them specifically. E-commerce brands. Coaches. Service based businesses. Consultants. Pick someone and build everything around solving their specific problems. The more specific you are the easier it becomes for the right client to find you and say yes immediately. 4. Then build your portfolio website and please do not be lazy about it. This is your digital store. It is the first thing a serious client checks before they ever reply to your pitch. Make it real, make it clean, make it specific to the person you want to attract. A focused website that speaks directly to one type of client and shows proof of your work will do more for your income than any amount of cold pitching ever will. The younger version of me did not know all of this. But now you do. Start from wherever you are and build it right this time.
