There are moments when etiquette must work harder than usual.
The carriage waits. The coachman holds the reins. The spring street remains perfectly respectable, as Mayfair streets are expected to do.
And then she lifts her dress.
Only because she must, of course.
One gloved hand gathers the heavy folds with practiced grace, just enough for her to place one foot upon the carriage step. A simple movement. Necessary. Proper. Almost invisible.
Almost.
For one brief second, the hidden architecture of her elegance is revealed: the laced black boots, rising far higher than any ordinary glance was meant to follow.
The footman sees them.
How could he not?
But he is a professional man. He keeps his face composed, his hand steady, his posture correct. Whatever thought passes through him belongs to silence, not to the street.
He assists the lady.
He sees nothing.
And Mayfair, with all its polished manners, continues pretending that nothing extraordinary has happened.
