So saddened to hear about the death of brilliant #TDSB educator and great person, Jay Williams. We spoke to him on everything from racism in schools, to pitfalls of virtual learning, to broaching Russian war on Ukraine in class . Gone way too soon. My heart goes out to his family

We lost a real one. My brother Jay Williams put his insides on the line every single time he showed up to work. He was special and we were all better because of him. @tdsb we need to honour his legacy.

Remember, if a teacher approaches a subject, topic, or activity with the mentality that the task is simply something to be “checked off”, then students will approach that topic with an unengaged mentality. Not something to actually engage in, but rather just another thing to do.

When a teacher truly knows themself, they are able to pursue the act of teaching in its truest sense. More simply, a teacher who is authentic to themselves takes action––teaches––in a way that can never be misconstrued as a charade.

Educators must be open and willing to giving every child a fresh start. Don’t allow last year’s attitudes, report card grades or hearsay from other teachers dictate how you engage and look at your new students. #NewSchoolYear #OntEd

Teaching is an act. In the purest sense of what that word means as a verb. To teach is to be compelled to take action. To move. To react. To do something. Teaching is also an act in the purest sense of that word as a noun. An action. A performance.

Back to school routines which are engaging can help in the transition after the long summer break. Bedtime, consistent meal times, daily reading, journaling. It’s not too late 4 more days. Let’s go!

Making sure as educators we have done at least a few things for ourselves this summer is so important as we get ready for the school year. There is still a bit of time to work on ourselves ⬇️ Thank you @callmemrmorris for the reminder
Matthew R. Morris@callmemrmorris

Lots of us educators are going back into schools over the next few weeks to work on our rooms, offices, etc. But did we work on ourselves? We still have a bit of time: read a book, find an article, watch a documentary, take a wake and just think. Breathe. #OntEd

Ideas when starting the school year: many teachers give students a “fun” activity and go back to their desk. When building community is prioritized, implicit in that is that YOU are part of your classroom community. Engage in the activities that you’ve planned with your students.

First day of school ideas: make it a dialogue, not a monologue. Facilitate opportunities for your class to be in conversation. Whether it’s using prompts or stemming from your thoughts and ideas, create a space where the goal is community.

When we talk abt student voice in education, in what ways do we provide students opportunities to design, create, OWN their own stories, experiences, recommendations and structures? @tanitiamunroe, 🙏🏽 for leading this work thru #BSSLP2023 #YPAR with Grad coaches @tdsb_cebsa
