I remember when Soul Plane leaked six months before its release. The first-time director tried to convince MGM to just put it out early, but they waited—and by the time it hit theaters, so many people had already seen it that it flopped. He never got another studio film after that. My agent at the time even said, “It’s too bad your people don’t support Black movies.” I fired her on the spot. Soul Plane did become a cult classic and I get residuals still to this day.
