Importantly, it is grapples with what it means to work in coalition until our movement represents a majority. In my time on the organized left it has been careful coalition work that has most effectively grown our ranks of leaders and increased our power.

As the terrain gets more difficult for the left and the unifying power of Sanders' campaigns is gone, it is important to reassess how we build a movement that can defeat the fascist right and the neoliberal center. This statement presents a path for organizing through this moment

Our caucus is excited to share our new political orientation and perspective statement! This was drafted through a democratic discussion & voting process among caucus members and aims to guide our work through next year’s @DemSocialists convention. (1/3) socialistmajority.com/theagitator/sm…

Licenses will ultimately be worthless & tax revenue a far cry from anticipated unless @nys_cannabis gets serious about illegal shops masquerading as recreational marijuana dispensaries but let's get these licenses out the door already!
@

The process of marijuana decriminalization involves paying taxes and knowing where cannabis is coming from. Yes, several shops are openly selling weed in New York City without a license. Where are the cops? fox5ny.com/news/unlicense…

TIL: The Jewish Theological Seminary (intellectual center of Conservative Judaism) was moved from the Lower East Side (heartland of Yiddish culture and Jewish socialism) to Morningside Heights (near Columbia) as a strategy for assimilation. @JewishCurrents jewishcurrents.org/the-sanitizing…

Thinking about this banger from June. Imagine calling yourself a progressive or yimby socialist (whatever that is) & taking your lead from flunkies who bootlick & shill for landlords like this. Maybe it's the Black American/Brooklynite in me, but I recognize an op when I see one.

@nealmeyer Do you believe we are not currently mentioning socialism? I just don’t think we should be as prescriptive about it.

@Skitelman Never said better comms will solve everything, but it's definitely part of the strategy. How can someone identify with a project that dare not speak its name?

I urge NYC-DSA convention delegates to vote against the 1234 plan. To grow we need to focus on building connections with the organized working class. Yet this plan imposes limits on the ways working class leaders can join our movement as socialist candidates and partners.

@nealmeyer I think it takes a lot more than marketing or palm card wording for people to make that connection. It’s why I think we need to win elections and legislate tangible results we can show people. It’s why I’m so excited for the future of our district organizing project.

@Skitelman I agree with you that pushing the popular program is key (point 3 of 1234 addresses this). But a popular program needs a label so people know how to talk about it and figure out who to vote for. We want people to say: "I like x platform, DSA champions it, and so I'm a DSA voter!"

@OutOnAnIsland @nealmeyer If I thought our loss was as simple as us knocking too few doors I’d say that. But again, we can chat another time

@OutOnAnIsland @nealmeyer I don’t believe this is why we lost those city council campaigns. Each loss was different but twitter is not the right format to go into it. We can chat after the next SBK meeting

@nealmeyer Is that how you feel NYC-DSA is perceived? Moreover, I think the Bernie Sanders did more to grow our movement than any and should be a model for us. He did so by never shying from his socialist identity while making his popular platform, not his socialist identity, the focus.

@Skitelman Hey Sam, you say that we should grow the socialist movement. I agree. But how do people know what movement we're part of if we don't label it and broadcast it? Having a common identity seems really important, otherwise we appear as disconnected one-off progressive campaigns, no?

The best way for us to grow the socialist movement right now is by inviting more working class leaders in to work with us and showing them that we can win together. Our focus needs to be on growing the movement, not disciplining the movement we already have.
