Witch Hat Atelier #05 is finally Kazuki Kawagoe's turn! An attentive & thoughtful director who's happy to lean on the anime's room to flesh out the characters, but obviously also super bombastic in the delivery. The most emphatic buildup to drawing a little bit, lol. Cool stuff

'Journal with Witch -Ikoku Nikki-' Director Miyuki Oshiro says that excessive "sakuga" can negatively impact anime "If the animation stands out too much, it can distract from the story, so I avoided going overboard, but I made sure to be meticulous. It's not a work that relies on flashy animation, after all." "Of course, it's better to have high quality, but when there's too much movement, your eyes get pulled to that. Even in scenes where I want people to focus on the actors' performances or the music, if the visuals move excessively, attention shifts there instead. That might be what people call sakuga (amazing animation), but sometimes that's not what I'm trying to convey. Deciding where to move things and where not to is something I've been conscious of ever since the storyboard stage."

"Journal with Witch" Anime ended today and is undoubtedly the Anime of the Year for me. It adapted 7 of 11 volumes, so you can start from Chapter 36 of the manga. But still I recommend to start from the beginning since it's only 54 chapters long.

Ikoku Nikki has been wonderful. Confident adaptation built from the ground around the grounded realities of people, understanding that the areource material's resonant humanity and the dashes of fantasy to illustrate the cast's interiority is enough to stick with you forever
