This vessel belongs to the Qijia culture, dating from 2300 to 1500 BC. It's a transitional culture that lived in the hilltop settlements of Gansu (northwestern China), standing right on the threshold between the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age.
This vessel is reddish-brown earthenware. The dark brown clouds on its surface are scorch marks from open-pit firing.
What was inside this vessel? In 2025, 42 Qijia vessels from the Mogou cemetery (Gansu) were analyzed. Residues of rice starch, Monascus mold, and yeast were found inside them -an alcoholic beverage produced using the 'qu' method, the traditional fermentation technique developed in China 8,000 years ago. In other words, they were offering alcohol to the dead.
