I wanted to just see what happens this time, but holy I didn’t know people weren’t aware of how huge the difference is between Japan and the West when it comes to improving at this game and supporting each other in their competitive circles.
The reactions showed me how many new people have joined Splatoon competitive, or how many unexperienced players are currently involved.
So many different tweets, so many different opinions, but one thing I saw a lot was “we need to play faster.” Hopefully, this is a lesson. Grey’s “main character” tweet.
There’s no single solution to catching up with Japan besides flipping our whole system, our mentality, literally everything. In the past, we had +1, which you could only join after an important tournament win against top players.
People weren’t built like: “Oh, I need results for my bio” or “I need to get into + with SQ to improve.” Even now, people want access to any + just to flex with a cringe number on their profile. So many good players have left the game. The overall skill level in the West has dropped. The only reason so many are in +1/+2/+3 is because 50% of the good players aren’t playing anymore.
Back then, we actually had teams grinding with the same ambitions and even Japan had teams.
I’m incredibly thankful for Sendou’s work with the + server, Sendou Ink, Sendou Q, and any other TOs who are part of it or any other tournament organizers and casters. Without you guys, we would be nothing.
In the past, all the top teams accepted scrims vs non-top teams or pick-ups, and that’s how I went from a random to a top-level player
I got destroyed in every scrim until I learned fast and started beating them.
The mindset of so many people is going in the completely wrong direction. So many want to farm badges, get a +whatever next to their name, or make fun of others but that’s not how the community grows. That’s not how Splatoon gets rid of the “non-serious esport” image.
The biggest part of growth is us as a whole. No single tweet changes anything if we’re not all looking inward and making changes, not just for appearances, but for real improvement. Otherwise, nothing, literally nothing will change.
In my opinion, part of what Grey said in his tweet or stream was definitely right. But to make a real impact, don’t say “play your favorite weapon and master it” if you’re not even willing to play with or against specific weapons when they’re not meta.
We need to get rid of the whole + server system. Everyone who really wants to reach the top should take X Rank more seriously. There’s a reason Japan treats X Rank with so much respect. Yes, they have a bigger player base with higher average skill levels but if we’re not even trying to push ourselves long term in ranked, how can anything change?
I understand that top level pickups or teams want to scrim against each other to improve, but how can they complain that others aren’t improving or that everything is boring, when they don’t even give people a chance to play with or against them? It doesn’t even make sense.
And still, they get destroyed by Japanese pickups that aren’t even the best or most popular ones. Think about that. There has to be a huge change in our whole system.
Stop clip farming.
Stop making pickups only.
Start doing real teams again.
Stop hunting badges and chasing random results like anime characters.
Grind X Rank.
Top level teams and pickups open your minds. Sometimes play against weaker players. Even if it’s just a BO9, it will have a positive impact.
In my opinion, we should start taking action on Twitter like japan does but only after the whole community has taken at least 1–2 seasons of ranked seriously.
Something Jackpot did what no one else really did was getting top level JP scrims, and not just once a month. It happened regularly.
We need to try more ways to connect with JP players in order to learn better and faster so we can reach a new level. Most of them are really kind & open to help! 🙏
