There is so much to be hopeful about in the world: the pace of technology and how it is improving our lives, and now with AI sticking a foot on the accelerator; the medical developments and their steady consolidation that may lead to LEV in the next twenty years; the likes of Musk making the first real steps to human occupation of the solar system in over fifty years; worldwide instant communication and data exchange. . . Then there are the likes of Miliband, dim ideologues entrenched in governments and bureaucracies all over the world, shoving their distorted perception of how things should be with centralised control, regulation and suppression, feathering their own nests at the expense of everyone else and humanity as a whole, coming in like a big wrecking ball to everyone's dreams and aspirations. I waver between optimism about a bright future and despair at the presence of grey slugs like Miliband crawling all over it.

@Recon1_ZA I've lived here since I was 6, and while it has much to recommend it, yes some people are great, it has to be said, it's largely a very mercenary, fractious society. Few give a damn about anybody else. If you lose your home & have no living family, no stranger is coming to help.

I received a phone call today from a friend in trouble. Kindest soul you'll ever meet in your life. Always thinking about others before herself. Couldn't hurt a fly. The call was shocking. To be honest, I was impressed. Never would have thought she had it in her. She got caught shoplifting. Kids' pajamas and a pair of jeans. Needed help outside of her circle afraid people would look down on her. I drove there. Thankfully, the store manager allowed me to settle the bill without making a case. Trust me when I tell you she didn't deserve further punishment other than the embarrassment she faced, but I'll never make excuses for a crime. She got a lucky break. Could have been much worse. That being said, the reality of what people are going through in South Africa - even the ones you never expected it from - is starting to hit home more frequently every single month. When people like this are beginning to break, we have a very big problem in this country, and time has run out. Look out for one another where you can. Some people around you are going through things they'll never admit. There is also no shame in asking for help. Don't do stupid things that could end up costing you so much more.
