The Value of Excellence Dear High Achievers, Let me begin with a simple but uncomfortable question: When your parents ask you, “Why didn’t you perform well in that subject?”—what do you say? You speak of the difficult paper… You mention the strict teacher… You talk about lack of time… But deep inside you know the truth. You did not give it your very best. Now listen carefully: Excellence is not something mysterious or reserved for a few gifted people. No. Excellence is simply doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way. The difference is just one word extra. Let me share a story with you that echoes the value of excellence. Many years ago, a visitor walked into a temple that was still under construction. As he moved around, he noticed a sculptor carefully carving a beautiful idol. A few steps away, he saw another idol almost identical. Curious, he asked, “Why are you making two of the same statues?” Without looking up, the sculptor replied, “We only need one. The first one got damaged at the final stage.” The visitor was surprised. He walked over, examined the statue closely, turned it around, looked at it from every angle but saw nothing wrong. Finally, he asked, “Where exactly is the damage?” The sculptor calmly said, “There is a small scratch on the nose.” The visitor laughed a little and asked, “Where will this statue be placed?” The sculptor answered, “On a pillar twenty feet above the ground.” Now the visitor was confused. “If it will be that high,” he said, “who will ever see that scratch?” At that moment, the sculptor stopped working, lifted his head, looked straight into the visitor’s eyes, smiled gently and said: “I will know it.” Students, that is excellence. Excellence is not about being watched. It is not about being praised. It is not about impressing others. Excellence is about you and your conscience. It is about doing the right thing, the best way, even when no one is there to clap for you. Some of you only work hard when exams are near. Some of you only read when a teacher is watching. Some of you only try when there is a reward. But true excellence? It is doing your best even when no one is watching. Even when it is hard. Even when it is inconvenient. Because at the end of the day you will know. Do not climb the mountain so that the world can see you. Climb the mountain so that you can see the world. The difference between an average student and an excellent one is not intelligence it is attitude. It is the decision to go the extra mile, to push a little harder, to stay a little longer, to try one more time. As Vince Lombardi once said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence.” And Mario Andretti reminds us, “Desire starts the journey, but commitment to excellence is what finishes it.” My dear students, challenges will come. You will feel tired. You will feel discouraged. But those who choose excellence do not stop rising. So today, I challenge you: When you open your books, choose excellence. When you enter the classroom, choose excellence. When you sit for your exams, choose excellence. When no one is watching, excellence chooses excellence. Because success is not an accident. It is a decision. And that decision begins with you. I believe in you. I value you. And I know you can be excellent. Canon Alice Ddamulira Director, St. Mark’s College Namagoma. #Smacon

Real progress happens when the vision of the school meets the passion of the home. Today’s meeting isn't just about updates; it’s about co-authoring the next chapter of our students' academic and personal journeys. Grateful for the parents who lead by example. #Smacon
