the version in singapore's hawkers evolved over time and is quite different the penang (?) one, that's why ya'll are confused. the distinction between the two is why no one calls it pasembur here btw - it indeed is unique to singapore but I guess we aren't allowed to say that?

I have no problem with “we have this food/dish in Singapore” But I do hv a problem when they claim that certain dishes originated frm Singapore and only can be found there Like wtf Pasembur originated frm PENANG and the sauce should be served poured with the veg + fritters lol
