1930 - No qualification, teams were invited. All the World Cup teams didn't have a local professional league in their country. British home nations (Wale, England, Ireland & Scotland) refused to participate. Uruguay who were eventual champions played 4 games.

The statements 'The World Cup is the biggest footballing tournament' or 'You need to win the World Cup to be in GOAT conversations' have never sat well with me. The World Cup is just a more 'prestigious', 'more globalized', and probably the most watched footballing tournament.

I didn't say he was cause I also don't have him top-10 but I won't push back on anyone that has him 10th. Anything higher than that is crazy. I can make a coherent case for him at 10th and I also think anyone that is really high on him can.

One of the biggest reasons comes down to structure, not just reputation. With Bayern Munich, their attacking shape is designed to manufacture isolation. Olise isn’t just “lucky” to find space, Kompany’s system is engineered to manufacture it for him (and Diaz) in a way that feels more deliberate and structural. They stretch the pitch aggressively, fullbacks pin wide or underlap, the opposite winger stays high, and the midfield (especially the 8s) occupy central lanes. They pull defenders inward with Kane dropping deep, Musiala/ Gnabry roaming, and quick rotations from the midfield/full-backs. That pins the opponent’s back line and midfield narrow, which naturally leaves someone like Olise in 1v1 situations. It’s less about “let’s find Olise” and more about “our structure forces you to leave someone exposed, and it’s usually him.” Olise himself facilitates this he’ll drop deep or into pockets to act as a link, then explode forward once the space opens. It’s not random isolation, it’s a repeatable pattern (overload middle → isolate wide → 1v1 threat). Compare that to Barcelona with Lamine Yamal. Barca’s build-up often move towards him early, and because he’s already established as the primary creative outlet, defensive schemes are biased in his direction. Fullback + winger help, sometimes even a midfielder shading across, so instead of natural isolation, he’s receiving with attention already locked onto him. There’s also a subtle tempo difference. Bayern move the ball quicker across the final third, which prevents defenses from fully shifting before Olise gets it. Barca, at times, circulate a bit longer, which gives opponents time to load Yamal’s side. Yamal is asked to hold width, beat his man, and create chaos which naturally invites tighter marking.

One of the biggest differences I’ve noted in watching Lamine and Olise is the context in which they operate. How is it that Bayern largely manage to keep Olise (relatively) isolated, or at least have him receiving in space? Is this a dynamic that’s being created by their tactical disposition, or is it simply that opposing sides perceive Lamine as a bigger threat? Would appreciate my tactico mutuals hopping on to educate me here.

It's just funny when you realize the talking point of how good Jokic is and how high he ranked by some people was due to the fact he didn't play with an all-star or All-NBA player, but he had that this season with a better roster and he failed in epic proportion. What an irony.
NBA Stats@sports_mediocre

It's fitting that Jokic's 11th season was his first with an all-star teammate... and that all-star, Jamal Murray, proceeds to become the first player in the last 20 seasons to attempt 21+ FGA/g and have a sub 40% eFG in the playoffs (min. 6 games)
