@history_beckons @dostoevesque I would like for the parties to be not pro any religion. That’s true secularism. Pro one religion will always mean anti another. Sadly political parties won’t do that because only when they position themselves as “pro-minority” will they vote en-masse

@SmitaSup @dostoevesque True. At some point, the outgoing govt crossed the line from being pro-religious minority to anti-Hindu. TVK Vijay is able to position himself as supportive of minorities without putting down the majority religion. That's why he won.

It's not all doom and gloom. I'm not sure why everyone is acting as if the state has already paved the way for saffron terrorists. The difference between DMK and TVK is around 3%, and DMK has emerged as a strong opposition party. The core narrative in Tamil Nadu is still going to remain anti-Hindutva. If people truly wanted Hindutva or could be easily brainwashed into believing Hindutva policies are good, they would have voted for the NDA instead of TVK. Viewing every non-DMK outcome as a slippery slope to Hindutva corruption is indeed overly binary and pessimistic. Politics here has always mixed populism, caste, welfare, and regionalism. Vijay is shrewd. You'd be fool to think otherwise. He's always seen this happening and was not testing waters. He knows the math cold. Minorities, Muslims and Christians, form a considerable voting bloc that has traditionally been loyal to the DMK. Alienating them would cap his growth. Expect TVK's governance or opposition pressure to stay firmly within safe Dravidian lanes, welfare populism, Tamil pride, and anti-BJP rhetoric, without anything that smells of majoritarian overreach.

In my lifetime Jaya Lalitha was the best CM the country ever had, once she mended her mistakes. That’s precisely why she got a consecutive 2nd term. People aren’t as stupid as such Rs 200 upis would like to indicate!
Kohinoor 🪬@lilmooncup

I know the bar is in hell for India but Stalin was objectively the best CM in the country. Being progressive and bringing about real change isn’t rewarded in India. The biggest shame was he was just getting started, so much more could’ve been achieved in 5 years.

It is pointless for Congress to continue in the DMK alliance. Going with Vijay now, they can reap a bumper from TN in 2029.

- Rekha Patra was victim of Sandeshkhali mass gang rape by TMC men. She defeated TMC candidate by 5000+ votes. - Ratna Debnath is mother of RG Kar hospital rape & murder victim. TMC attempted shield the culprits. Ratna defeated TMC candidate by 28,000+ votes - Kalita Maji is a maid who worked at four different houses to sustain her life. She was harassed by TMC workers regularly for supporting BJP. She defeated TMC candidate by 12,000+ votes. Democracy is alive and kicking in India. Anyone who disagrees is just a chatukar of politicians who lost today.

@sumanthraman Tired of the D parties - empty promises and the babu culture + cinematic pull (something that the D parties encouraged) + Ineffective leadership at ADMK, BJP sacking Annamalai to please them, central command entertaining the DMK first family at Delhi despite politically opposing

What do you think was the primary factor that motivated the TN voter to vote for TVK???

Three women. Three victories. One message. Rekha Patra — Sandeshkhali gang rape survivor Defeated TMC by 5,000+ votes Ratna Debnath — Mother of RG Kar rape-murder victim Defeated TMC by 28,000+ votes Kalita Maji — Maid harassed by TMC goons for supporting BJP Defeated TMC by 12,000+ votes They tried to silence them with violence. The ballot silenced their oppressors instead. This is what happens when victims refuse to stay victims. When a rape survivor becomes a representative. When a grieving mother becomes a mandate. When a working-class woman becomes unstoppable. Every vote was a vote against impunity. Democracy is alive. And , it wore the face of courage.

Bengal under TMC reminds me of Bihar under Laloo in 80s and 90s. Rampant corruption and gundaism. I’m glad the people of WB have risen to stop the monstrosity.

1. Just got off a call with @UnSubtleDesi. I couldn't be happier for her and both of us couldn't help but discuss the harrowing days of post poll violence in West Bengal in 2021. So I am going to share what happened five years ago just so ppl know what happened. #WestBengal2026.

Vijay’s victory did not happen overnight. It’s what the D parties have been cooking for the last 50 years. Idolising cinema stars, ignoring leaders’ loose morals, encouraging youths to fall for rhetorics, normalizing alcoholism… Cry upis, you deserve this humiliation!!

Do u know what DMK did to VS Babu, he was attacked by DMK goons, they broke his spine, he was in hospital for 3 years. This is the best cinema revenge in TN history, defeating MK Stalin.
Sriram@SriramMadras

VS Babu is a better field worker than Sekar Babu. The biggest mistake @mkstalin made was allowing PKS to have his way in Chennai. PKS acted almost like the CM of Chennai; nothing moved without his consent. I actually feel very sad for MKS.

@dostoevesque ADMK is history. What’s left now is a skeleton that’ll soon crumble from the inside. They have 0 ground connect. I can’t help but feel BJP is stupid to expect them to deliver results.

@SmitaSup Forget BJP, even ADMK is a non player outside Kongu. BJP in TN is almost done and dusted. They banked on DMK never having beaten the anti incumbency to help NDA win the elections, but grossly underestimated Vijay.

BJP has completely lost the vote share they gained with Annamalai at the helm! I’m clueless why they are backing losing horses like Tamil music, Tamil kadavul and Ex ADMK candidates when they have done zilch for BJP to grow here? Serves them right for neglecting people’s choice

It’s not just cinema factor that TVK is winning. People are simply fed up with the D ideology that’s all talk but 0 action. With the kind of talking these D stocks do TN should have eradicated caste discrimination 50 years ago but in reality it’s worse now than it was back then

@dostoevesque Both DMK & BJP think people are dumb. It’s non-Hindu hate in the north and freebies n anti-B propaganda in TN. I’m glad people have seen thru DMK’s false narrative. As for central, BJP doesn’t have a strong opposition to challenge it yet.

One of the main reasons the DMK had to be removed from power was its systematic control over public discourse. The party positioned itself as the sole authority on what was morally and politically right, and relied on journalists who claimed to be neutral to spread that view. In practice, this manufactured neutrality often masked a deep alignment with the DMK's own worldview. This allowed the party to present itself not just as one political option, but as the only legitimate and righteous force in Tamil Nadu. It is very similar to what BJP does in the national level. Rather than engaging the Congress primarily on policy or governance, the BJP often frames it as anti-national, while claiming for itself the exclusive right to define what nationalism truly means. As a result, any opposition risks being portrayed not as a legitimate alternative, but as a betrayal of the nation. In both cases, the ruling party shifts the ground from healthy competition over ideas to a test of loyalty. The DMK homogenized Tamil Nadu’s outlook by equating dissent with being anti-Tamil. Similarly, the BJP shapes national discourse by linking dissent with being anti-national. Once a party gains control over powerful words like righteousness or nationalism, the opposition finds itself constantly defending its loyalty instead of presenting its own vision. Citizens are left with just one acceptable frame of reference. Breaking this kind of narrative monopoly matters deeply. It is not about swapping one dominant party for another, but about restoring a genuinely pluralistic public sphere. No party should mistake its own version of righteousness or nationalism for universal truth. In this context, the fact that Vijay does not come with a hardline stance feels particularly welcome. Tamil Nadu needs fluidity more than anything right now. The space for ideas to evolve, for dialogue to remain open, and for politics to adapt without rigid ideological walls can make a real difference. That flexibility could help prevent any new player from repeating the old pattern of narrative control. Democracy thrives when different voices can debate ideas openly, without any side acting as both player and referee.
