This BBC story on the recent malicious campaign to stoke sectarian tensions is a must-read.
One has to be extraordinarily spiteful toward Pakistan to blow events so out of proportion, especially in such uncertain times.
Clerics themselves confirm that the Field Marshal’s tone was cordial and empathetic until he referred to the havoc in Gilgit Baltistan. The “protesters” burned a UN office - yes, a UN office - and the 62 Brigade HQ, while killing three security personnel.
Somehow this stern message against violence created an “impression (تاثر)” among some clerics that they were being scolded instead of the rioters.
It is genuinely appalling that senior clerics mounted such a coordinated and inflammatory response based merely on an impression, despite being fully aware of the context.
