During the first race of the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers (18 April 2026), a serious accident involving seven competitors occurred in the early stages of the race. Following the collision between several vehicles, race control immediately halted the race to allow for extensive recovery and rescue operations. Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the emergency medics were unable to save the driver involved, Juha Miettinen (BMW 325i, #121), after he had been extracted from the vehicle; the driver died at the Medical Centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful. The other six drivers involved were taken to the Medical Centre and nearby hospitals for precautionary examinations. None of the injured are in a life-threatening condition. The race will not resume on Saturday evening. The thoughts of everyone involved in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring are with the bereaved family of Juha Miettinen. A minute’s silence will be held in memory of the late motorsport competitor during the grid formation for Sunday’s race at 13:00.

Verstappen rijdt vandaag het tweede gedeelte van de race, in het donker. Start en beginfase laat hij aan teamgenoot Auer op de Nordschleife.

@recca777 @wearetherace Nope. The slower classes need to stay predictable = staying on the racing line. It's the faster car's responsibility to overtake safely which means you sometimes have to wait a corner to be able to overtake.

@JosephPetrassi @SnakezF1_ @cozierpanda @wearetherace This is not F1 dummy. If you have a significant overlap, you are granted space. And significant overlap = front to rear axle or more. It's a very debatable verdict from the stewards, but it's not like controversial rulings like that are a new thing.

@SnakezF1_ @cozierpanda @wearetherace Nice cherry-picked screenshot. But there was far more overlap. It's just that Auer spotted what was happening, and he tried to back out to avoid the crash. There was half a car length of overlap, if not more.

@ErvVonOx @cozierpanda @wearetherace There was way too little overlap. Merc should have waited that corner and would have easily been able to overtake the next corner. Lucas Auer has already blamed the incident on himself and apologised to the Porsche driver 🤷‍♂️

@SnakezF1_ @cozierpanda @wearetherace But he isn't wrong though. Merc already went for the move and there was a lot of overlap. It's qualifying and everyone wants to have a clean lap with no traffic, but you can't really turn in on someone and expect them to disappear.
