Let me tell you the absolute best underdog story of the muscle car era. In 1969 everybody was obsessing over expensive Mustangs and Camaros. The guys at American Motors were sick of being called the boring grandma brand so they teamed up with Hurst Performance to build a total street terror. They took their cheapest and lightest economy car and violently shoved a massive 390 cubic inch AMX V8 engine under the hood. It made 315 horsepower and had a ridiculous mailbox hood scoop with an actual arrow painted on it just to mock you.
This was the SC Rambler and it was a pure factory hot rod. They sold it for just under 3000 dollars making it the ultimate budget drag racer. Chevy and Ford purists absolutely hated pulling up next to this goofy red white and blue box because it would effortlessly blow their doors off at the green light. It completely dominated the drag strips. We traded this insane working class horsepower for overpriced luxury pods today and it is a complete tragedy.

This young man was Erich Hartmann. He became a Luftwaffe pilot at 18. He is confirmed to have shot down 325 enemy aircraft and is the most successful fighter pilot in history. He was captured in 1945 and spent the next 10 years as a POW. He stood by his beliefs and never buckled. He passed in 1993 at the age of 71.
