As Group Leader of the Cardiac Bioengineering Lab, James (@jehudson85) has built a groundbreaking research program around human cardiac organoids—tiny, beating heart models grown from pluripotent stem cells. These organoids mimic the human heart by self-organising multiple cell types, from cardiomyocytes to endothelial cells, offering a powerful platform to study complex cardiac diseases. The real-world impact? James’s organoids pinpointed drug candidates for heart damage from inflammation, like in severe COVID-19. His data even supported a Phase II clinical trial for hospitalised patients, potentially saving lives. James has been awarded the 2025 Jacques Miller Medal.
