There's a physicist at Stanford named Safi Bahcall who modeled this exact principle and the math is wild. He calls it "phase transitions in human networks." When you're stationary, your probability of a lucky event is limited to your existing surface area: the people you already know, the places you already go, the ideas you've already been exposed to. Your opportunity window is fixed. When you move, your collision rate with new nodes in a network increases nonlinearly. Double your movement (new conversations, new cities, new projects) and your probability of a serendipitous encounter doesn't double. It roughly quadruples. Because each new node connects you to their entire network, not just to them. Richard Wiseman ran a 10-year study at the University of Hertfordshire tracking self-described "lucky" and "unlucky" people. The single biggest differentiator wasn't IQ, education, or family money. Lucky people scored significantly higher on one trait: openness to experience. They talked to strangers more, varied their routines more, and said yes to invitations at nearly twice the rate. The "unlucky" group followed the same routes, ate at the same restaurants, and talked to the same 5 people. Their networks were closed loops. No new inputs, no new collisions. Luck isn't random. Luck is surface area. And surface area is a function of movement. The lobster emoji is doing more work than most people realize. Lobsters grow by shedding their shell when it gets too tight. The growth requires a period of total vulnerability. No protection, no armor, soft body exposed to the ocean. That's the cost of movement nobody posts about. You have to be uncomfortable first. The new shell only hardens after you've already moved.

@DougieCritchley Even Carrick made mistakes at Middlesbrough that he has learned from. We live and we learn.

I'm sure Ruben Amorim is absolutely fine... Sitting there a rumoured £10m-£12m richer after being fired from a job that he didn't appear to want by the end... But this revival under Carrick... really, really doesn't reflect well on him at all. I honestly wonder whether it'll affect the calibre of job he is offered next.

🚨 Report: Footage shows Gabriel refusing to shake Harry Maguire’s hand after Man United’s dramatic win over Arsenal. Tempers flared late on, with Gabriel and Maguire clashing before full-time. After the whistle, Maguire offered a handshake, but Gabriel turned it down. Noussair Mazraoui stepped in and pushed Gabriel as he continued shouting, before Senne Lammens pulled the Arsenal defender away and led him down the tunnel. Maguire stayed on to celebrate. Gabriel exited, still fuming.

During Morocco vs. Nigeria, Nwabali had his towels repeatedly taken by ball boys and stewards, stopping him from drying his gloves. Moroccan players even tried the same with Édouard Mendy, but Senegal’s players shut it down. After the final, Nwabali had the last laugh 😅

Woke up, was about to take a shower, and realised someone had stolen my towel. Called my Moroccan friend who lives nearby and turns out he’d blocked me for no reason. What a weird start to the day.

Big Shout out to Senegal’s reserve goal keeper Yehvan Diouf, who was active all throughout the game handing Edouard Mendy his towel and fighting off ball boys and Moroccan players. A Real Soldier.💪🇸🇳

🚨I grew up in the era where Luis Nani was seen as “mid,” and now I’m expected to rate Sancho, Antony, and Garnacho? Nani was a hard-working, useful player who still got hammered for “inconsistency” (and yeah, sometimes he was). Nobody cared about his confidence, whether he needed an overlapping full-back, or if he was better as an inside forward. In 2010/11, he put up 28 G/A in 33 PL games as a midfielder and still got slated as the most inconsistent player in the squad. Now, players with worse numbers get a laundry list of excuses. Standards have fallen, but it’s no shock — most United fans online have never even seen us win the league. #MUFC
