Yes 'poverty' in the political sense, is a meaningless measure in the UK as it is measured relative to others. By that definition, there will always necessarily be high amounts of 'poverty' and it is just a justification for higher taxes and wealth redistribution. The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money.

The insanity of this cannot be overstated. The UK defines relative poverty as living in a household with income below 60% of the median income in that year. Because the Boriswave are mostly low-wage, low-skill migrants, many meet this definition the second they step foot in Britain. And because of this, MPs are now arguing this is the group that should be allowed to obtain ILR and permanently settle in Britain, so they can claim benefits and increase the welfare bill further. All this while tax thresholds for working British people have been frozen since 2021 and are set to remain frozen into the 2030s. Just look at the number of people with ILR status who are claiming Universal Credit, in April 2022, it was 95,612, in January 2026, it's 222,076, that's a 132% increase. Britain cannot afford the Boriswave being allowed to settle.

I agree with him. By all means be more stringent about who gets a passport in future, but once the British state has given some one a passport they are entitled to rely on it. Doesn't mean you have to house and pay for everyone - that's a separate policy issue. The alternative is to start sneering at British passports and start deciding who is 'British' enough. It's a minefield. What if you have one British parent? What if you have lived here for 10 years and paid taxes? It leads to uncertainty. You've got to draw a line somewhere and a passport/citizenship is a good place to draw it.
