@pawelwargan @plbmagazine Wow, a real life Polish commie citing Marx and Mao - I thought you guys died out in the "neoliberal Holocaust". Absolutely hilarious that you are then clearly in awe of China, exposed to excesses of the worst kind of red in tooth and claw capitalism over the last 3 decades.

After Hitler’s armies, the most destructive and lethal blight to hit the peoples of the former Eastern Bloc was not some “communist crime”. It was the forced restoration of capitalism—a neoliberal Holocaust that claimed nearly 17 million lives. My latest for @plbmagazine.

@KnightofTh3v3ng @NTFabiano Well, but by your analogy, there is public awareness and different social customs regarding drinking beer, wine and spirits. A lot of countries limit the sale and distribution of the spirits much more than low alcohol beverages. Should be doing the same wrt to THC content.

It is black and white. Legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana the same way you do with alcohol and cigarettes. It’s time to take control of this issue and treat marijuana the same way we handle other substances. Banning substances won't magically make it go away. The black market will still be there selling deadly and unregulated products. Simultaneously, educating the public to empower them with informed decision-making is crucial for public health.

@AaronBastani @Nina_Compact That applies to STEM too, although I would definitely put the threshold higher, at 20-30% depending on the field. I strongly believe that if we let the other 70% evaporate, scientific progress would not be harmed. A lot of work is derivative and so incremental that is irrelevant.

@Nina_Compact Surely that just refers to arts and humanities? Tho I don’t think it’s that low personally. We need *more* research into earth sciences, material sciences, healthcare innovations (from gene editing to stem cell research), robotics, maths, physics. A lot of that is v important!

@FirstBSA can you please explain why you took 10 p off my debit card in the middle of the night today when I was nowhere near a bus?! I used the card the day before to purchase a two trip adult ticket in Bristol...

@pete_the_teapot Guess who comes off as a manipulative bully here? And yes, I would be mortified to press send on the email you received from the Professor but your response has been equally out of line.

@pete_the_teapot And so despite coming from an entirely different corner of biology, I was able to establish that the guy did contribute a seminal paper on the topic (Science, 1988). So this is a more nuanced situation not comparable with citing Mendel.

I've just invoked Art.99 of the UN Charter - for the 1st time in my tenure as Secretary-General. Facing a severe risk of collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, I urge the Council to help avert a humanitarian catastrophe & appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared.

@thomasforth Is this really true? I have lived in a few European countries and never saw those LED lights. Prices are centralised the same way like here in Poland and Central Europe. Oh, and obviously there are differences in prices between say small Tesco Metro and big Tesco shops.

This is very much not how things work elsewhere. Which is why supermarkets in most of Europe have those LED instant-change price labels. They're operating per-shop pricing of exactly the same items based on local costs and local competition. twitter.com/NicholasNCE/st…
Nicholas Brooke@NicholasNCE

@thomasforth I'm always surprised how centralised British supermarkets are compared to their French counterparts. Here no two Carrefours have the same prices.

British supermarkets effectively agree (it's a voluntary agreement partly brokered by the competition authority) to charge the same prices for the same products in every shop. Which is very odd and whenever I read it again I don't believe it. centreforcities.org/blog/4-reasons…

@AinslieJstone Great stuff, but for comparison, it would be interesting to see projected estimates of winter excess deaths in Ukraine due to direct bombing of energy infrastructure by Russian military.

The damage Putin is inflicting on Ukraine is immense-the cost for its allies is less visible. If our estimates are right, the cold may be a bigger killer than the fighting. Read more about the model, and see how temperature affects winter deaths in Europe⬇️econ.trib.al/Jm2skKx

For most of Europe, the impact of Putin’s war in Ukraine has been measured in inflation percentages rather than lives lost. As winter sets in, that may be about to change. Our interactive explains how Europe’s high energy prices could be deadly. A 🧵 econ.trib.al/Jm2skKx

This was such a brilliant video I subtitled it so more people can watch it. Beijing students' response last night to accusations that there are 'foreign forces' at play in this weekend's protests 'The foreign forces you are talking about – are they Marx and Engels?'
