Gary did what he had to, there was no safety net or help, just that he had to get his affairs in order or else. Nick will never learn because even in his 30's job hopping, he had a safety net from the trust fund for the family. It's not "what Nick COULD do" it's every bit of "what Nick WANTS to do", but people with common sense know this, and that's why his audience shrinks. He made his life "the content" then got pissed when people didn't like it, or made it a focal point for criticism. Then got pissed when he couldn't put the lid back on Pandora's box, because society was worried for his kids. Gary went down the rabbit hole further then Nick, and made it back on his own accord. Nick will never make it back for various reasons, but the biggest is that he himself will never admit to doing anything wrong.

Narcissist Nick seethes at people holding him to a standard. If you were to compare @RekietaLaw to Gary from Nerdrotic, the difference could not be more stark. Gary had, through drugs, potentially ruined his life, even serving a prison term. However, Gary did the "change and grow up" part and now has a successful life, career and the respect of his peers. Nick despises any sense of obligation and ultimately rebels against it, even if that obligation is in his own best interest.
