“A people that has forgotten its traditions, its ancestors, and the sacrifices that bought its freedom is a people already conquered. For the man without memory is easily ruled, and the man without roots is easily led.” — Hilaire Belloc

The Church cannot move with the times; simply because the times are not moving. The Church can only stick in the mud with the times, and rot and stink with the times.

A thrilling day for me at the Ray Bradbury Center in Indianapolis. Bradbury is a most important literary influence in my life-- and I got to sit in Ray Bradbury's writing chair...

“Because the horror of Communism, Stalinism, is not that bad people do bad things — they always do. It's that good people do horrible things thinking they are doing something great.” Slavoj Žižek, born 21st March 1949

In 1916, seemingly on a whim, C.S. Lewis picked up Phantastes at a book stall in Leatherhead. This is the book that Lewis says baptized his imagination and set him on a very different path than his espoused materialism would have allowed. Without this stroke of providence, we might not have the Lewis we read today. It is also very possible that we would not have the Tolkien we read today.

Nine out of ten of what we call new ideas are simply old mistakes. The Catholic Church has for one of her chief duties that of preventing people from making those old mistakes; from making them over and over again forever, as people always do if they are left to themselves.
