Four things to understand about TikTok: 1. ByteDance, which owns TikTok, is a Chinese company. This is not debatable. TikTok's description of itself as a "privately-held global company is misleading." 2. The Chinese Communist Party both sees TikTok as a Chinese company, and wields considerable influence over the app. Like it or not, approve of it or not, that's the reality. 3. TikTok in a time of U.S.-China peace is comparable to Meta. With tensions as they are today, TikTok is a worrisome tool of influence. In a time of war, TikTok under Beijing's control could be a potent and incredibly dangerous weapon. 4. U.S. laws restricting foreign control over broadcasting and information have lagged behind on social media. In 1985, Rupert Murdoch became an American citizen, because there were clear FCC restrictions over foreigners owning American TV networks. Those rules never caught up to fast evolving social media -- hence Congress today.
